Exodus Travels
The term “Overlanding” is originally an Australian word for droving of livestock across very long distances either to discover new pastures and/or livestock markets. In modern times, Overlanding has come to mean on-road and off-road adventure or travel through a variety of means, from bicycles to SUVs and customized overland trucks. Overland travels are meant to inculcate values like self-reliance, endurance, resilience, physical exercise, research, team-bonding, enjoyment, etc. Overlanders are lovers of outdoor, recreational and leisure activities, camping experience, exploration of geography as well as the acquisition of more knowledge about the earth through sight-seeing. There is also a strong passion for vehicle/auto mechanics, customization, and the construction of a unique rig that is ideal for the personality and needs of each overlander. Commercial overland travel started evolving in the late 1960s when companies began to offer overland tours to clients in large, customized overland trucks. These tours which were mostly to destinations in Africa could last for months and were organized in such a way that made the paying passengers participate actively in areas like food preparation, food purchasing, and setting up camp. The height of these adventures was the 'trans', or journey from Europe to Cape Town in South Africa. It was also around this period that Overlanding in its most technologically modern form characterized by the use of mechanized transport evolved with the advent of commercially available four-wheel-drive trucks from different manufacturers. The few earlier pioneers before this period travelled in comparatively less sophisticated vehicles. Overlanding is now a worldwide phenomenon whose popularity continues to grow. In 2015 the Overlanding Association was formed to provide help, support, and information to overlanders.
